Abstract

Large scale basin and dome structures with intense buckling in some layers are recorded in the Archaean high grade metamorphic-migmatitc complex of the Eastern Ghats near Visakhapatnam, South India. Two major phases of deformation have been deciphered. The earlier phase was regionally continuous, and resulted in nonplunging, tight and isoclinal (overturned) folds, as well as gently plunging elongate structures. The axial trends of these folds vary from NE-SW to ENE-WSW. Gneissic layering of rocks, development of axial plane schistosity and tight isoclinal angular parasitic minor folds, and large scale shearing and faulting in the axial regions, are correlated to this event.

The later phase of deformation was discontinuous and variable in nature. Southerly/southeasterly plunging, open to tight, normal, similar folds belong to this event and they were superposed on the earlier structures. They modified the pattern and plunges of the latter, and also produced intense buckling or gentle warping locally at several places. Development of warp-like open minor folds, and groove and mineral lineations are correlated to this deformation.

On the basis of critical synthesis of the available structural data, the evolution of the Balacheruvu basin and Madhuravada dome has been attributed to a single deformation of the earlier phase of folding.

Abstract

A newly identified body of nepheline syenite with associated non-feldspathoidal syenites from the Rairakhol area of Sambalpur district in the Eastern Ghat belt of Orissa sector adds to the present population of such complexes in this segment of Precambrian crust of Indian Peninsula. Recent researches have emphasized the significance of these bodies as a major Late-Proterozoic tectonothermal marker event in this belt.

The Rairakhol syenitc complex consists mainly of nepheline syenite, syenite and minor quartz syenite. Biotite and hornblende are the chief mafic constituents which occur as accessories in varying proportions. This body is emplaced within an interbanded sequence of quartzite, khondalite and charnockite. Syenitic rocks have a flow banding/foliation well-developed at many localities. A pink pegmatitic K-feldspar sycnite possibly represents a late-magmatic product. Occurrences of a few relatively smaller bodies of similar composition are also recorded.

Abstract

High-Al gabbro is reported here for the first time from three anorthosite complexes of Orissa sector of Eastern Ghats Granulite Belt (EGGB). It has distinctly different textural, mineralogical and chemical characters from the anorthosite within which it occurs, and also from the spatially associated Fe, Ti and REE enriched ferrodiorite suite.

The high-Al gabbro of EGGB is comparable to similar rocks from other anorthosite complexes in major, trace element compositions and Mg# range (50-58). However, in contrast to the high-Al gabbro of the Laramie Anorthosite Complex (LAC), it does not form the most primitive rock of this association and exhibits negative Eu anomaly (Eu/EU^* 0 2 0 6). The Mg enriched composition of the silicates of the high-Al gabbro and higher MgO contents of the associated anorthosite and ferrodiorite of the LAC are other critical differences.

Variable composition of the parental melts for these rocks at EGGB and LAC is interpreted Derivation of these aluminous melts by partial melting of basalt under high pressure i s suggested.

Abstract

Pseudotachylytes occur associated with mylonite and ultramylonite in the Mahanadi shear zone (MSZ) in the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt (EGMB). The MSZ is about 200 km long curvilinear high strain zone trending WNW-ESE in its eastern part that splays out in the west. In Kantilo-Ganian segment of MSZ in northern EGMB, an interbanded sequence of granulite facies lithoassemblage has undergone ductile shearing. Kinematic studies of mylonite and ultramylonite indicate MSZ to be a NE-dipping, extensional type ductile shear zone. Non-coaxial metamorphic growth of garnet and presence of truncated sillimanite-fish in ultramylonite suggest high temperature regime during shearing. Pseudotachylytes in MSZ occur as millimetre thick layers to decimetre thick zones containing fragments of mylonite, ultramylonite and lithic clasts. Pseudotachylyte generation veins are mostly sub-parallel to C-planes and the injection veins cross-cut at high angle to these. The presence of an isotropic glassy matrix, injection features, corroded grains and dendritic microlites can be evidences for the existence of a melt phase. The composition of pseudotachylyte matrix (by EPMA) indicates silica deficiency with higher normative hypersthene, plagioclase and lower quartz compared with average whole rock composition for host. Absence of overprinting of mylonitic fabric on pseudotachylytes indicates their formation by brittle failure without passing through a plastic deformation and thus a two stage development for mylonite-ultramylonite and pseudotachylyte generation is suggested.
